English Newsletter: The Wild Wild West

The Wild Wild West

Hello from Port Moresaby,

We just finished our last outreach for this year in the Western Province which is considered to be one of the last few remote places on earth or the Wild Wild West. I have been on all 7 outreaches and it was a great season but also had great challenges, especially our equipment gave us troubles in this harsh environment we work in.

In the Western Province I could do some more community development, sand filters and installed a solar suitcase as well as keeping the engines running on the ship.

This week the ship went on dry dock to do some survey and maintenance work.

Plotting a new course, back home to Germany…

living in a PNG village in Kapuna for 2 months

Initially I planed to go home after this outreach season, but I”m going to leave all the comforts of the ship behind to go for at least two months to Kapuna Hospital which is in the swamp in the Gulf Province (see on google map). We have been there over the last 4 years with the ship. I will help where ever I can. At the moment they are building a new school. Also I have a lot of ideas that I want to try out with community development, small business ideas and so on.
For some people it would be a nightmare living in a swampy remote village with all different sorts of dangerous animals and deceases, but it’s a life long dream that is coming true for me. I will fly in there on the 10th October. Only my PNG visa has to be sorted until then.

After Kapuna, I plan to make my way back to Germany. More than 2 years since I have been home and it’s time to catch up with family and friends.
I will hop my way back and make some stops in NZ the west coast of the USA and maybe a few other places on the way. If you are somewhere close to me to catch up let me know.

It is a new season and seeking new direction. I am not renewing my VISA for Australia/YWAM in Townsville and for now I have to trust God that he opens the door at the right time.

I will keep you updated!

Blessings,

Gerald

PS: I still have some expenses to cover from the last few months, as wellll have extensive cost over the next few months traveling back home. If you want to help me to get home, check out my new donation page here, which makes it easier to donate in various ways and different currencies.

Pictures and Stories from the Wild Wild West…
Blind can see…
this young mum of 3 children wasn’t able to see since 4 years.
She got early cataract due to genetics. In this photo one eye has been operated and the other one a few days later. It was amazing to see the change in her and to see blind people get opened their eyes.
Operation theater in Daru
55 cataracts have been removed as well as other operations in just 2 weeks. Most of the people have been completely blind.
The Solar Suitcase before it was installed. This will help improve maternal health in this region. If you want to know more and also support Adrielle who is running different projects to improve maternal health, check out her website.

Have you ever complaint about hospitals, or have you ever wondered what a birth, outside in the bush would look like? (read more: birthing life in the bush).
Fixing and teaching some more 2 stroke engines
On our last outreach in Daru, I was doing media, which means taking a lot of pictures and did an interview with 2 dentist who got the i-dent chair donated, which is a portable, solar powered dental system.
Giving some river side assitance to a local health worker boat which was on patrole.
We had to leave 5:30 in the morning to drop of our medical team. It was an awesome, crazy ride up this narrow creek against the time because the tide was going out and we could have been stranded for several hours.
